Homeowner resources

Learn your system.

A working knowledge of your aerobic septic system prevents most emergency calls. Below is the same walkthrough we give every new homeowner — plus manuals, chlorination guidance, and alarm troubleshooting.

Process

How an aerobic septic system works.

Six stages, from the moment wastewater leaves your home to the moment cleaned water returns to your yard.

  1. 01

    Trash tank

Solids drop out and separate. Grease and lighter waste rise to a scum layer.

  2. 02

    Aeration chamber

Air is pumped in so aerobic bacteria can digest the organics — the heart of the system.

  3. 03

    Clarifier

Treated liquid separates from remaining solids; the solids return to the aeration chamber.

  4. 04

    Pump tank

Clean liquid is stored, ready to be dispersed on a timed cycle.

  5. Disinfection

Chlorine reduces bacteria to safe levels before dispersal.

  6. Dispersal

Sprinklers distribute the treated, disinfected water across your permitted spray field.

Septic system basics

What "aerobic" actually means.

A conventional septic tank relies on bacteria that thrive without oxygen. An aerobic system runs an air compressor to feed oxygen-loving bacteria — they digest waste more thoroughly, so effluent leaves the tank much cleaner and can be safely sprayed onto a lawn instead of dumped into a drain field.

More treatment power means more moving parts: a compressor, an alarm, chlorine, and a control panel. That's why regular inspection is legally required — and why an informed homeowner saves the most money.

FAQ · Basics
Septic system basics — what should every homeowner know?
Your aerobic system is a small on-site wastewater plant. Its major parts are the trash tank, aeration chamber, clarifier, pump tank, chlorinator, and sprinkler field. Give the compressor clean power, keep the chlorine stocked, and have it inspected on schedule — that covers 90% of what your system needs from you.
How is aerobic different from conventional septic?
Conventional systems disperse partially treated waste underground. Aerobic systems treat more thoroughly and spray disinfected effluent above ground, which is why they're required on many lot sizes and soil types in Southeast Texas.
I need a new septic system — where do I start?
Start with a site walk. Call the shop and we'll come out, look at the soil, footprint, and drainage, and talk through what your county allows before any paperwork begins. A new install starts with permits and ends with a final inspection and coverup — we handle both.
Chlorination guide

Keeping your effluent safely disinfected.

Chlorine kills the last remaining bacteria before treated water leaves your system. Homeowners generally choose between two forms — here's how they compare.

Attribute Chlorine Tablets Liquid Bleach
ChemistryCalcium hypochlorite — septic-formulatedSodium hypochlorite — unscented bleach
Feeder typeDry tablet chlorinatorLiquid drip chlorinator
Refill cadenceCheck monthly; refill as tablets dissolveRefill jug on a regular routine
DoUse only septic-rated tabletsUse only unscented, non-thickened bleach
Don'tNever use pool-store trichlor tablets — they release toxic gasNever use scented, splash-less, or gel bleach
How often should I add chlorine tablets?
Check monthly and top up so tablets are always visible in the chlorinator tube. Household usage swings the burn rate significantly, so calendar-only refills tend to run empty at the worst possible moment.
Can you refill chlorine for me?
Chlorine refills are included on maintenance visits under our online maintenance contracts. Call the shop to add refill service or ask about pricing for a standalone visit.
